Grenada educators study online programmes in Canada

The Caribbean Knowledge and Learning Network (CKLN) sponsored a two-week study tour to Canada for three representatives of the TA Marryshow Community College (TAMCC) in Grenada to expose them to the processes of integrating online programmes into traditional colleges.

The group visited six tertiary learning institutions and service providers in Canada that offer and support distance and online courses. This activity falls under the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) programme funding of CKLN.

The tour explored institutions in two provinces, starting in Ontario where they visited Embanet, Ontario Learn (Consortium of Ontario Colleges for Distance Education), Ryerson University and Humber College. Then it continued over to the western province of British Columbia, where they met with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and Thompson Rivers University.

“This is but one in a series of study tours by CKLN that form part of the overall development of tertiary institutions in the region towards being able to deliver programmes and courses online,” explained Candia Alleyne, CKLN Institutional Strengthening Coordinator.

“The three TAMCC representatives that went on the study tour are part of an overall team spearheading the distance education initiative at that college. They each looked at different aspects of distance education implementation and now have added to their knowledge base enabling them to contribute meaningfully to furthering distance and online education development at their institution.”

This activity follows on from the presentation of the development equipment which CKLN presented to the institution earlier this year and the Learning Management System training that some members of TAMCC faculty received last November. These activities were made possible by funds which CKLN received from the Organisation of American States (OAS), European Union (EU) and the World Bank.
