Hughes to Operate Distance Learning Network for the Social Security Administration

Filed under:

Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the global leader in broadband satellite network solutions and services, today announced it has been selected as prime contractor by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to provide operational support services for its distance learning network and has received an initial task order for $4M.

Under the agreement, issued through the U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA) SATCOM-II contract vehicle, SSA has outsourced the operation and support of its Interactive Video Tele-training (IVT) Network to Hughes. Hughes will provide total life cycle management of the IVT Network to include video and broadband satellite network solutions, including: satellite airtime (space segment); equipment; maintenance; integration; on-site staffing for the SSA’s IVT network; and hub operation and maintenance. In addition, Hughes will provide a two-way satellite data network application to support agency Continuity of Operations (COOP) planning requirements. The IVT Network reaches out to more than 1,650 SSA offices in the Continental United States, as well as Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The total award by SSA, which covers all elements of the program, is expected to be worth over $40M during the five-year performance period.

“We are delighted to have been selected by SSA to operate and support their mission critical IVT Network over the next five years,” said Tony Bardo, assistant vice president of Government Services at Hughes. “We are proud to assist SSA in broadening its IVT educational program reach to its civil servants throughout the nation with a solid and cost-effective platform. We are looking forward to implementing Hughes’ proven broadband satellite solutions to facilitate distance learning, provide network resilience, and create mission success across the SSA.”
