Existing IIMs to be mentors to new ones
Fearing dilution of brand IIM if the proposed Indian Institutes of Management do not attain the same degree of excellence as the existing ones, the HRD Ministry appointed committee has recommended that the seven IIMs should be actively involved in the establishment and management of the six new IIMs.
“If these (new) IIMs are not able to maintain the standards of the other IIMs, not only will this dilute the brand image of all IIMs, but will also result in a huge waste of public money. For this reason, it will be definitely desirable that each new IIM is managed by one of the existing IIMs,” the five-member committee headed by R C Bhargava has stated in a report submitted to Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh.
Besides the seven IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Lucknow, Kozhikode and Shillong, the Centre has announced plans to open six new IIMs in Jammu & Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand.
The Bhargava Committee has suggested that the building plans for the new IIMs should take into account the future requirements of expansion and ensure optimum use of land.
“These IIMs should function on the pattern of the most modern corporates, in terms of administration and financial processes.
Where possible, outsourcing possibilities should be seriously considered.
Common systems and processes should be developed for these six new IIMs,” the report states.
Other recommendations include use of technology in conjunction with an existing IIM to compensate for shortage of faculty, involving Pan-IIM Board to raise private funds for IIMs and deputation of underworked faculty of one IIM to another IIM.
