Information
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is trying to build a regional constellation of satellites (a set of satellites both existing and those to be put in orbit in future linked to each other), according to Surendra Pal, Deputy Director, Digital Communications, ISRO Satellite Centre.
He was speaking at a national seminar on Current trends and applications of GPS here on Friday.
The regional constellation will provide the country with its own Global Positioning System (GPS), which could be of great help to many sectors, including the Defence sector.
He said that GPS could be used to forecast weather, and monitor road, rail, and air traffic. The biggest beneficiary would be automated banking sector, as it would lead to quicker transfer of money, he said.
Dr. Pal said that ISRO had recently signed an agreement with its Russian counterpart to put the constellation of satellites, called GLONASS, in place. The Russians had so far put 17 satellites in space.
He said though India was using GPS, controlled by the United States of America by virtue of being a partner, it was also trying to join GALILIEO, another GPS offered by the European Commission.
But they could not be relied upon fully on all occasions. There are chances of signals being denied when they are most needed by our Defence or any other important sector, which is why we are trying to put our own navigational satellite constellation in place, he said.
The former Chief Advisor of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, K.G. Narayanan, said that the future of GPS in the country should be decided by involving institutions such as the Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI) and the Institution of Engineers. Countries working on the system should exhibit transparency so that there could be a debate on crucial clauses.
The day-long seminar, jointly organised by the Bangalore branch of AeSI and Bangalore Chapter of the Madras Institute of Technology, had sessions on the use of GPS in aerospace and defence applications, transport sector, and the current and future trends of GPS.
