With cut throat competition, peer and parent pressure, students these days dont mind going to tuitions six days of the week, in addition to regular college classes. The tuition fees are often higher than the college fees. But no ones really complaining.
Says Anup HS, a second PU science student,We pay Rs 4,000-6,000 per subject depending on the institute. The annual fees for four subjects can be anywhere between Rs 20,000-Rs 24,000 per year. My college fees are Rs 5,000 per year. These extra classes really help as I find it impossible to manage on my own. We have weekly tests which is a good thing. Our lecturers use audio-visual teaching aids and there are about 40 to a class as against 110 pupils in my college.
Rohith GR finds the tuitions quite helpful. His tuition fee is Rs 15,000 a year and includes CET guidance. But if you are not focussed and dont pay attention, theres no use taking coaching classes. He lives an hour away from the heart of the city and often reaches home only at 9.30 pm after coaching class.
Pooja Ravishankar, a telecom student, refuses to take tuitions but many of her classmates do. Fees could range from Rs 1200-Rs 1700 per semester. Each semester is about three and a half months long. I took special classes for graphics but could not attend more than five classes, she says. There were about 50 of us cramped in one tiny room. It was so claustrophobic and one student had to sit outside the class! Pooja says this tuition craze is a fad. It is a mind block. You can sit in the comfort of your home and study much better, she says
