Information
Protests, allegations and counter-allegations ruled the day, as the PGCET counselling for MBA courses that made a determined beginning on Monday morning was called off by evening.
The inaugural function of the counselling session attended by Minister for Higher Education D Manjunath, VTU Vice Chancellor, Dr K Balaveera Reddy and Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Sobha Nambisan was marred with protests by several students who alleged that the counselling went against the interests of Bangalore University(BU) students, whose results were yet to be declared. VTU had announced the ranks based on the PGCET marks only for those candidates, who had submitted all the marks cards of their qualifying examinations. With this condition in force, BU students feared that their counselling session would be indefinitely postponed resulting in loss of seats.
(Incidentally, the BA results of BU, that were awaited, was announced on Monday afternoon. The B Com results were declared on Sunday evening.)
The anger of the protesting students was fuelled further when Dr Reddy maintained that the counselling session will not be stalled or delayed for the convenience of BU students.
We had announced the counselling schedule three months ago. Do IIT and CAT counselling sessions get altered to suit a specific university? Then why should we? We have been sending reminders to BU. In fact, we even have a BU representative in our PGCET Board, so the university was well-informed. We cannot make any changes in the schedule, Dr Reddy said.
Later, speaking to Deccan Herald, a visibly upset BU Vice-Chancellor M S Thimmappa accused VTU of high-handedness in the entire issue.
We have over 3 lakh students from nearly 450 colleges in our university, the largest in the State. Our schedules cannot be compared to those of smaller universities. The VTU Vice-Chancellor argues that sufficient time has been given to us to announce the results. But we were not consulted at all, and our requests of delaying the counselling date was also not considered. Our students are being put to hardship for no fault of theirs or the BU, Dr Thimmappa said.
