The Tarbes Community College wishes to impart the best of education to the poor and help them surge forward with confidence.
Each of us have the responsibility to help our less fortunate brethren. To impart to them the best of education and help them stand up on their feet. The Tarbes Community College is one such Catholic institution which was established with a vision to educate and empower young girls from the poorer sections of society. This concept of community learning, adopted by colleges in the United States, was replicated in India by Rev Dr Xavier Alphonse in 1992 with a mission to educate the less fortunate. He tailored the structure of the curriculum to fit the Indian environment. Today, Tarbes Community College is one among the 30 colleges set up in India.
Mission
The college, headed by Sr Rose Marie, admits those from poor families, offers them a one year job oriented course and helps them surge forward with confidence. When we look around us and see the fast-paced growth, we can hardly believe that beneath all this development and progress is another India an India flooded with the poor and the down trodden, says Sr Rose Marie.
Courses offered
The course content includes English, Interpersonal Skills, Communication Skills, Life Coping Skills and Computer Science. Computer Applications and Home Management will be added on from the next academic year. In fact the college has just seen their second batch of students graduate. Among the 40 who graduated, 18 had passed their high school, twelve had finished their PUC and ten were school dropouts. The graduating batch have already been placed in various jobs.
Bright-eyed Anthoniamma, a graduate who has already been placed in St Johns Academy says, the college has given me the confidence to realise my dream of becoming a teacher. Twenty seven-year-old Keerthi, who recently graduated says she was encouraged to take up the course by her husband.
Now, after the course Keerti finds spending time with her six-year old son more fulfiling and rewarding.
