The prospects of CBSE candidates in Tamil Nadu gaining admission to the MBBS course through counselling was raised by one participant at The Hindu Education Plus Fair.
The student pointed out that from the analysis made by the panellists, it appeared that no Open Competition candidate from CBSE would be in a position to get an MBBS seat through counselling.
The forecast was that there was little chance of any candidate with less than 295 marks to get into the MBBS course. This meant that even with a centum in the entrance examination, the candidate would need a score of 195 in the Board, which was nearly impossible in the CBSE stream. In answer, Prof. P.V.Navaneethakrishnan, an expert on the panel said this situation was causing concern. If the Board marks were not considered, as in Andhra Pradesh, such a scenario would not apply to the CBSE candidates. However, not taking the qualifying examination into account created a different kind of aberration, as the students did not give much importance to the Board examination and put in all their effort only into the entrance examination. This produced poorly equipped students in a general sense.
For admission purposes, in Tamil Nadu, the weighting of scores was of the order of 200 for the Board examination and 100 for entrance. If this was modified to 100 for the Board and 100 for entrance, the disparity affecting CBSE candidates could be reduced.
