Personal computers and laptops notwithstanding, manual typewriting machines are far from their doomsday in Tamil Nadu, if one goes by the claims of commercial institutes in the state about revival of interest in typewriting courses. Over 70,000 candidates had registered for various levels of typewriting courses during the current academic year at institutes in Tamil Nadu.
Typewriting courses in institutes in Tamil Nadu are regaining popularity of late, he said pointing out that for the same corresponding year, only about 15,000 candidates had registered in the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The situation is worse in Kerala where the awareness entropy had gone down.
In 1982/83 and 1984, total registration had exceeded 1.25 lakh in Tamil Nadu and over two lakh in other states like Kerala. The early setback had been for a few years in Tamil Nadu till 2001-02, but there is an upsurge in interest in manual typewritig in recent years, Santhana Krishnan said.
An estimated 42,000 candidates had taken part in exams held by the Department of Technical Education of Tamil Nadu government for junior level typewriting in February this year. The projection for February 2006 examinations has been put at 50,000 plus.
There are over 3,600 commercial or typewriting institutes (recognised or possessing government licences) in Tamil Nadu at present. Everyone is running the show with full attendance or capacity utilisation.
