A student who scored zero points at math in the National College Entrance Exams (NCEE) failed to gain any marks in a double check. The student, surnamed Zheng, appealed to the examination board after learning her examination results. She thought it was impossible for her to receive no points as she thought every NCEE subject had basic points.
Professor Liu of South China Normal University, who was responsible for rechecking Zhengs paper, showed Zhengs answer sheet and the official mark scheme to a reporter. He said Zhengs answers were far from correct and she even failed to answer easy questions correctly. A representative from the examination board also said there were no basic points. Zero points in the paper will still be zero when converted to standard points. Standard points range from zero to 900.
The provincial examination center director said each answer sheet was evaluated by three teachers in the NCEE and it would be checked by a fourth teacher if the score was zero points or full marks. It was almost impossible for all four to make an error marking the paper. A total of 267 students in Guangdong Province alone scored zero points on the math exam.
