Admission Rules to be changed by IIMs

Filed under:

The six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have decided to change their admission rules. IIMs , till now, accepted only graduates from educational institutions recognised by the Associaiton of Indian Universities (AIU). However, anyone who qualifies in the CAT exam will now be eligible for admission to an IIM.

This would open up opportunities from students from non-AIU member institutions to prove their talent. Two graduates from DAIICT, one of whom had scored over 99 per cent in CAT, were denied admission in IIM(A) because the institute was not an AIU member.

With the new CAT rules, the competition will intensify as more and more students appear for the test. Around 1.37 lakh graduates took the CAT to compete for the 1000-odd IIM seats last year. This number is likely to cross 1.7 lakh with the new decision.

As the numbers rise,
The government is considering increasing, as numbers increases, the number of seats in the existing IIMs, as well as starting a seventh IIM in the Northeast.
