Global Open Food and Agriculture University (GO-FAU) and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) recently announced the launch of MSc in Agricultural Economics and Business and MSc in Agro-ecology.
IGNOU will fund the programmes which will be offered through distance mode. The fee structure will be determined by IGNOU. According to the programme leader of International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI),Suresh Babu, the courses will have international approval, but will be certified by the Indian university or institution that would be partnering GO-FAU.
GO-FAU, an IFPRI initiative, will provide the education material, training of faculty and exchange programmes with international agriculture institutes for research. The post-graduate programmes in agriculture is the result of IFPRIs endeavour to further agriculture education. IGNOU was approached to partner the programmes because of its distance learning delivery mechanism and students evaluation system. Besides, the universitys new department of agriculture would also prove beneficial for the new agriculture programmes.
Stating that GO-FAU would be happy to partner with any university interested in agriculture issues, Babu said: We are looking for partnerships rather than offering our own courses directly. We dont want to compete, but strengthen the local institutes. He said that the purpose is to create a dialogue on diverse agriculture and related issues and to look into the facilities available in the university and offer international support in delivering such courses.
On future collaborations with other Indian universities, Babu said that education in agriculture needs to change to meet global standards. The collaborations will prepare the farmers to meet the globalised world head-on. For this, we need to prepare the institutions, which include trade and marketing, research and academic, he added.
