International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) has submitted a proposal for consideration with the Andhra Pradesh government, to establish Distance Education campuses in different parts of the state.
The campuses are projected to be opened in Vijayawada, Warangal, Visakhapatnam, and Tirupati among others.
According to a press release, the proposal to this effect was placed before Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy by Raj Reddy, professor of Carnegie Mellon University USA, who is associated with the IIIT at Hyderabad. These centres are proposed under private-public partnerships.
The proposal is expected to take a final shape by January 2006 and the construction of these facilities would be over by 2010, the press release said.
As per the proposal submitted to the government, the selections would be made for 20 per cent of the students in all engineering colleges. Of these, only those students who successfully complete the intensive two-month IT workshop would be eligible to join the IIIT Distance Education campuses.
The expected annual intake at each campus would be around 4,000 students, which will work out to a total of between 12,000 to 16,000 students by the year 2010, the press release said.
