The Shiksha Bachao Andolan Samiti (SBA) on Monday registered its protest over the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) engineering a deviation from the National policy of Education, 1986.
The SBA, a forum of 14 cultural groups, during its interaction with NCERT director Krishna Kumar, pointed out total absence of reference to value education, dilution of content in social sciences, marginalisation of Sanskrit and several other things in the Draft National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for schools.
The Human Resource Development Ministry under Arjun Singh has proposed to present the draft before the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) during its next meeting later this month.
It will probably be passed by the show of hands as the 102-member CABE has nominees of the Congress and the left-ruled States in majority.
The SBA is peeved over the fact that the Draft NCF was not even circulated fro wide discussions. As for instance, the Vidya Bharati Network of Schools, which has three million students all over India, was not given a copy of draft for perusal, according to the SBA sources.
During the interaction with Mr. Krishna Kumar, the SBA representatives, pointed out the new draft NCF not only ignored the emphasis on the spiritual development as mentioned in the National Policy on Education 1986, but it also marginalised Sanskrit.
The SBA said that the new draft NCF also ignored and negated the concept of Indianness and the ancient Indian tradition of Wisdom. The SBA also pointed out that the draft NCF blacked out value education or value-based education.
Incidentally, the National Policy on Education, 1986, was a brain child of former Congress leader and Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and was upheld during the BJP-led NDA Rule.
