IIMs Changes Admission Rules
The six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have decided to change their admission rules.
Till now the IIMs accepted only graduates from educational institutions recognised by the Associaiton of Indian Universities (AIU).
However, anyone who qualifies in the CAT exam will now be eligible for admission to an IIM.
The earlier rule, created in 1993, now stands void. This would open up opportunities from students from non-AIU member institutions to prove their talent, said Bakul Dholakia, Director, IIM Ahmedabad.
Two graduates from DAIICT, one of whom had scored over 99 per cent in CAT, were earlier denied admission in IIM(A) because the institute was not an AIU member, said Gaurav Mundra, a DAIICT graduate.
With the new CAT rules, the competition will intensify as more and more students appear for the test, he added.
Last year, around 1.37 lakh graduates took the CAT to compete for the 1000-odd IIM seats. With the new decision, this number is likely to cross 1.7 lakh.
As the numbers rise, the government is now considering increasing the number of seats in the existing IIMs, as well as starting a seventh IIM in the Northeast.
