MCD-run schools are crying for care. As many as 238 classrooms function in tents, 54 schools are without electricity, 30 schools have no provision for Delhi Jal Board Supply and 16 schools are without toilets.
While students carry on without essentials like uniforms, shoes, socks, desks and school bags, ironically, the Congress-led MCD has been unable to utilise the fund allotted for schools under the plan and nonplan heads. There are about 9.5 lakh students enrolled in the 1850 primary schools run by the MCD.
Highlighting the plight, leader of opposition in the MCD Subhash Arya said that due to poor coordination, the corporation had been unable to utilise Rs 52 crore under plan head and Rs 200 crore under non-plan head between 2003 to 2005.
There are 9.5 lakh students in 1,850 MCD primary schools. Citing records, Arya said: Even today 210 classes are being run in verandahs, where children dont have duel desks to sit. In schools where toilets exist, there is no provision for water. He also pointed that during 2004-05, it was proposed to open 60 nursery schools, but not a single one was opened. The target was instead reduced to 30, which has also not been met, he alleged.
He further said that as many as 4000 posts for teachers are lying vacant and though computers have been put in 1000 schools, no specialised teachers for imparting computer education.
