JNU Denies Change In Admission Norms

Maintains that no student had been turned away because of his Madrassa background

NEW DELHI: Even as the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) claimed on Monday that the controversy over the admission of madrassa students had been resolved, the University denied any change in the admission process and maintained that no student had been turned away because of his madrassa background.

But the student community here was still not convinced, with the JNUSU pointing out that there had been a `wrong move` but it was checked on time.

The University today said it has been admitting students who have completed B.A first year or final year from Jamia Millia Islamia or Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to the BA second year or MA in various languages in the university. Even this year we have admitted such students before any report on this matter appeared in the newspapers,

While pointing out that candidates who come after passing the first year of BA or final BA exam from Jamia or AMU on the basis of madrassa education are admitted after `due verification` of the system of education and percentage of marks, the university today explained that invariably the madrassa certificates are in languages other than English and Hindi and are required to be properly scrutinised by the Administration. It takes some time to do the checking.

It further added that such candidates are therefore given time to come again for registration so that the certificates in languages other than English and Hindi are properly verified. The university has been following the system of scrutinising the certificates in languages other than Hindi and English every year and admissions are given after the same are properly scrutinised. Since it takes some time, the candidates are requested to come again for verification.

But the JNUSU brushed aside the University`s claim and accused it of using flawed logic.

There has to be a valid ground for asking a student to come again. Saying they asked the student to come again because he had an Urdu certificate is using absolutely flawed logic as we have Urdu teachers who can check the certificates. I remember there was a student last year who brought a caste certificate in a regional Indian language, but it was checked. In any case Urdu is a recognised language and being a central university and we should recognise it,“ said Mona Das, JNUSU President.

The University, however, said no discussion has been held regarding the matter in the Equivalence committee or admission committee so far.

HIGHLIGHTS

i Madrassa certificates are in Urdu so some time is taken to scrutinise them, says the University.
ii The JNUSU brushes aside University authorities claim and accuses it of using flawed logic.
