Children studying in various schools of the city will get to meet their less fortunate counterparts rescued from domestic employ as part of a unique project to be launched here Wednesday.
A yearlong project by CUTS-Centre for Consumer Action Research and Training (CART), a city-based non-governmental organisation, and Save the Children of United Kingdom, envisages interactions with child domestic workers to raise awareness about their plight.
The project Hum Bhi Bachche Hain (We are also children) begins Wednesday in 35 schools in collaboration with the Rajasthan government, said George Cheriyan of CUTS.
Child domestic workers, as the name implies, are children working within the homes and thus invisible to public scrutiny. We want people to understand the issue and generate awareness about child domestic workers through a child-child approach, said Cheriyan.
The first phase has been organised for a year from July 2005 to June 2006.
According to him, the project aims to seek the involvement of the state in making it compulsory for schools we well as the government to check and prevent child domestic work.
A survey states that 17 percent of domestic workers in India are under 15 years of age and 40 percent of them are girls.
India employs the largest number of working children in the world. Every third household in the country has a working child.
Cheriyan regretted that despite the gravity of the problem, there was no official data or record about child labour in many states.
