The Delhi Govt. is all set to launch a Computer Aided Learning project in 200 government-run schools

NEW DELHI: As part of its initiative to ensure that benefits of Information Technology and computer education percolate down to the grassroots, the Delhi Government is all set to launch a Computer Aided Learning (CAL) project in association with leading multinational consultants, Earnst and Young, in 200 government-run schools to covert the normal classroom into multimedia classroom from the sixth standard onward from August 10.

The Directorate of Education will sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with E&Y on Wednesday to flag off the project on a pilot basis in 200 schools through the Universal Elementary Education (UEE) Mission.

This is part of the initiative by the Education Department to bridge the gap between the children studying in government schools and those who pass out from public schools.

The objective of the project is also to reduce the drop-out rate from sixth standard onwards as the trend has been that a large number of students after completing their primary education in MCD schools till fifth standard are not able to reach the government schools for various reasons.

It has been observed that a large number of children take admission in government schools from MCD schools and they are unable to grasp the content of sixth standard, as they are not properly trained. A survey has found out that, as English language is not compulsory in MCD schools up to Class V. A child coming from an MCD school has to start learning English from sixth standard, which becomes a bit difficult. However, under the new multimedia facility, lessons would be imparted through animated forum making it easy to learn and easy to explain. The Education Department is of the view that this will help generate interest of the students in the subjects and help concentrate in the classroom learning inciting them to attend classes regularly. In Computer Aided Learning, the teacher through a CD that contains the cartoon-based stories would teach the content.

It is expected that this programme will save time in teaching and learning thus leaving more time for practice and exercise. The teacher can explain the content with number of illustrations in a short period of time through visuals so that children could grasp the content instantly. The programme contains numerous self-generating exercises and question banks both subjective and objective. This will also make the government school children literate right from sixth standard and encourage usage of computers and related material.

It is understood that a multimedia based bridge course has been developed at CAL Labs Timarpur for introduction of this subject in 200 government schools.

The E&Y consultants have agreed to provide all the hardware required for implementing the CAL project for all the schools in the pilot project and would also maintain the same.
