Quota Comes As A Blessing To Middle-Class Muslims

The five per cent reservation has come as a big opportunity for students who cannot afford a seat in a private medical college

VIJAYAWADA: The middle-class and poor Muslim families could not conceal their happiness as their children got MBBS seats, when counselling for filling BC-E seats under the five per cent Muslim reservations came up on Monday.

The quota has come as a big opportunity for many students, who otherwise would have ended up securing a Government BDS seat.

Md. Afzal Pasha, father of Arshiesafirdous Mohammed, who secured a seat in Siddhartha Medical College, said his daughter would not have got this opportunity but for the five per cent quota. My daughter got 1,874th rank in EAMCET. She was planning to do BDS. If there was no reservation, she would have had to choose a payment seat in a private medical college. We cannot afford this, said Mr. Pasha said, a medical shop owner at Chintalapudi in West Godavari district.

Paeans for Government

The feelings of many parents were joy, thankfulness and excitement at the online counselling centre at the NTR University of Health Sciences.

We profusely thank the Chief Minister for giving this opportunity. He has made an impossible thing possible. We owe a lot to the Government, said M.G.M. Jeelani, a registered medical practitioner from Kakinada. His son, Md. Khawaja Mohiuddin, could realise his dream of studying MBBS thanks to the quota.

Pleasant surprise

Khawaja got 2,220th rank in EAMCET and was only expecting a payment MBBS seat in a private medical college, which his parents were not in a position to afford. He already got admitted into a BDS course in the open category. Now, he got a free MBBS seat at Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada.

I never expected this. With the rank I got, I would have taken up BDS. This is a rare opportunity and we are thankful to the Chief Minister, Khawaja said. Jaffarvali Sayyed, 520th ranker in EAMCET, was the first to avail of the five per cent Muslim quota in Andhra University area. He got admission into Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam.
