Sarva Siksha Abhyan Highly Successful In Chennai, Says Project Official Kalaiselvan

CHENNAI: Nandini, Divya, Vinodini and Kalpana, from Shivaji Nagar at Royapuram, will be among 800 students who will join formal schools this year under the Sarva Siksha Abhyan. The children have completed a year of study in Don Bosco Anbu Illam at Royapuram. Giving away the Chennai Corporation transfer certificate and schoolbags to the students, V.K. Kalaiselvan, Assistant District Programme Co-ordinator, Sarva Siksha Abhyan, said the project was successful in Chennai. Tamil Nadu has been topping in the implementation for the past three years.

He said the project involved starting new schools, upgrading existing schools, organising cluster resource centres, implementing civil works, intervention for dropouts, inclusive education for the disabled, innovative teaching, computer education and education for girls.

The aim was to make students study up to Standard VIII. Teachers got Rs. 500 a year for preparing teaching and learning materials. Schools got Rs. 2,000 a year as grant for purchasing articles for Standard I-V. If the school had up to Standard VIII, the amount would be Rs. 4,000. Government and Corporation schools with Standard V would get Rs. 5,000 and up to Standard X Rs. 10,000. While Tamil Nadu received Rs. 500 crores for 2005-06, Chennai received Rs. 7 crores. The dropouts were given Rs. 840 each (from Standard I to V) for their education expenses; students of Standard VI-VIII received Rs. 1,200.

M. Muniamma, a social worker, who teaches at Don Bosco Anbu Illam, said it was tough to persuade parents to send their children to school. Sometimes, we have to bathe and dress them and bring them to school, said E. Kanchana, another teacher.

Sometimes the parents scold us for not allowing their children to work, said another teacher
