Board Asks Schools To Teach Students To Say `No` To Drugs
NEW DELHI: Taking a serious note of the rising cases of drug abuse among the country`s young, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has now dashed off a circular to all affiliated schools asking them to put in place an effective“ plan of action to educate students against the use of drugs.
With one of the major objectives specified by the General Framework of Adolescence Education being to make the learners aware of the causes and consequences of drug abuse and ways of preventing it and to develop in them a rational attitude as well as the skills to say `no` to drugs, the CBSE feels it`s time for schools to act fast.
In the recent circular, the Board noted that timely and sustained effort is necessary to educate and empower children so that they do not fall victims to the obnoxious habit of substance abuse, and expressed hope that all affiliated schools would address this serious concern by putting in place an effective programme of action.
While describing drug abuse as an important curricular concern in school education that has been in discussion for quite sometime, the circular notes that the Government of India is of the view that there is a need for proper networking among different agencies to facilitate effective organization of programmes to bring awareness among students about drug abuse.
The CBSE feels that with the student community today getting information from different sources, it is the responsibility of schools to empower the children by providing the right information as well as skills to help them make the right choice for a healthy life.
While asking schools to take an integrated method by going for both curricular as well as co-curricular approaches to attain the goal, the Board has suggested that schools try and use the curricular components that are already incorporated in different subjects by highlighting them for raising awareness amongst students about drugs and its harmful effects.
Some of the activities suggested by the Board for schools include sensitization through formal and informal discussions, raising awareness by arranging interactive sessions with experts in the field and strengthening the counselling component by sensitizing school counsellors to handle issues connected with drug abuse.
