PC To Bless Special Project For Citys Business Students

Filed under:

Finance minister P Chidambaram on Friday will launch an important initiative in Mumbai for business students which offers them mentorship and training in corporate houses.

Four colleges and 14 major groups, including MTV, M&M, Pepsi, Kotak Mahindra, Godrej and DSP Merrill Lynch, have decided to join hands in imparting training to the students in HR practices and other activities. The colleges chosen are HR College of Commerce & Economics, BM Ruia College for Girls, NSS College and SNDT College.

It`s a mix bag. Some of these institutions cater to middle and higher middle class, while the last one handles the economically weaker sections, Milind Deora, a Congress MP from south Mumbai and a force behind the initiative told ET.

The Stimulating Inspiration, Guidance & Mentorship Association (Sigma) is an initiative towards increasing the interaction between the industry and the academia, by providing an opportunity to undergraduate college students to gain early insights into management paradigms, Mr Deora explained.

The proposed scheme is aimed at exposing business students to corporates` day-to-day functioning. It`s being planned on the lines of such courses in the US, Mr Deora said. It aspires to prepare industry-ready professionals, he said.

The initiative seeks to address this task with mentor companies short-listing students in colleges and involving them in activities such as work assignments, investor meetings and in other initiatives and by inviting companies to participate in the college curriculum by organising seminars, workshops and guest lectures on the campuses.

Such two-way interaction will assure students the right opportunities for jobs and the companies the right employee to suit their needs, the young Deora said.

The initiative, the first of its kind Mr Deora claims, will be flagged off in the presence of Mr P Chidambaram.

Students and principals of these colleges will rub shoulders with some of the top guns of India Inc. Post-launch, these colleges will set up their chapters to deal with the companies, and send their students for training.

We want the programme to be self sustained. To begin with, the undergraduates from Commerce stream and the students studying the management can take part in it, said Mr Deora
