The latest batch of students from the city applying for US education is pleasantly surprised to find fewer visa rejections and more scholarships and aid.
Almost 99 per cent of admitted students got visas. The rejection rate was as high as 30 per cent in the post-9/11 years. This year, 10 per cent students of admitted students received full funding, and I m confident the rest will get funding after the first semester. Earlier, hardly five per cent used to get full funding, reveals educational consultant Dilip Oak, rubbing his hands with glee, expecting a great rush at his academy, because of the hopeful signs. Oak concedes business was hit by 40 per cent in the last three years.
Arundhati Alur of Career Forum has also seen a student visa rejection rate of up to 30 per cent in the last three years. But this year, something unprecedented happened. Not only is the visa clearance ratio above 85 per cent, but also management students for the first time received aid. Top school Thunderbird offered a scholarship. They have clearly stepped down their visa requirements, she says. This year, a lot of pure science students have got scholarships, adds Oak.
Officials at the US consulate in Mumbai, however, neither deny nor confirm the trend. The role of the consulate is to treat all visa applications on merit. We deal only in facts, which is why we may publish the actual number of student visas issued on our website. But trend analysis is not one of our activities, they clarified.
Ravi Pandit, who heads KPIT Cummins and the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture, however, has observed a significant rise in student visas to the US.
