Enquiry Reveals Surprising Facts On DU Engg. Entrance Exam
A study of examinees who have qualified for the Combined Engineering Examination of Delhi University (DU) and their comparative performance in other examinations has come up with certain startling revelations. The person securing 13th position in the (DU) list is ranked 221262nd in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by the CBSE. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
There are four others in the 13th rank with not just the same marks but also with equal marks in physics, chemistry and mathematics. And this trend is repeated in the merit list in three other positions, putting into doubt the candidature of at least 21 students.
After the issue was brought to their notice by the Principal of Delhi College of Engineering Prof PB Sharma, the response of Delhi University authorities has at best been lukewarm. So far it has skirted the usual university drill adopted in these matters and refused to order either a re-checking or revaluation of the marks, forget scrapping the whole result.
The university has also not followed the usual route of ordering a proctorial or a judicial enquiry in the matter. It has instead asked an `independent external agency`, whose identity has been kept a closely guarded secret, to probe the matter. This is ridiculous. The person who has brought the scam to the public notice has not been even called to depose before the enquiry. If somebody else wants to give proof, he or she doesn`t know where to go and whom to meet, said DUTA president Aditya Narain Mishra.
This agency has failed to meet the deadline on submitting the report, which has led the High Court to intervene and pass an order for submission of the report by July 25 now. The drill has been violated as far as reporting the matter to the Academic Council, Executive Council and the University Court goes.
Going by the marks, the performance of the 11 candidates who secured 56th position scoring 516 marks each, one will again be surprised to see that all of them scored equal marks in Physics (186), Chemistry (139) and Maths (191). As per the theory of probability, there are 250471 ways to obtain 516 marks. So, the probability of a student getting 516 marks in a particular way is 0.000003992 and the probability of 11 students getting 516 marks with the same marks in Physics, Chemistry and Maths is 0.41083558. Equally thin are the chances of five students securing the 13th rank with equal marks in PCM, added DUTA president Dr Mishra.
Again on the 25th position, three candidates have scored 527 marks in total and share the same marks in PCM, which mathematically is an impossible phenomenon. Interestingly, each of the controversial 21 candidates had secured very poor positions at AIEEE conducted by the CBSE including two candidates who were ranked 25th and 36th at CEE securing 330151st and 371434th position at AIEEE.
The examination was conducted by DU on May 30 and the results of the 1110 passed candidates were published on June 15.
Smelling a rat, Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) Principal Prof PB Sharma reported the matter to DU in the last week of June. An external independent investigating agency was appointed by the university and the report is yet to be submitted.
Meanwhile, the matter was heard at the High Court, who has directed the university to produce the report by June 25. Not revealing much about the investigation, Prof Deepak Pental, the acting Pro Vice-Chancellor of the DU said, The report will be produced in the court on time. Counselling for admissions of the candidates began on July 13 with these 21 cases being kept at abeyance
