Having spent the last part of his career browbeating politicians, former Chief Election Commissioner T.N. Seshan has now come up with a backhand winner: he is starting a school that will teach politicians and bureaucrats to be … well, politicians and bureaucrats.
The just-launched MIT School of Government (MITSOG), Pune, which will have the formidable former bureaucrat as its chairman and dean, claims to be the first institute in Asia to offer a full-fledged post graduate course in social and political leadership. The aim is to empower the next generation of politicians to master the complexities of government and to equip them for a serious career in politics and bureaucracy,“ Mr. Seshan told reporters.
The guest faculty at MITSOG, run by the Maharashtra Academy of Engineering and Educational Research`s MIT Group of Institutions, reads like a list of the country`s political who`s who ranging from L.K. Advani to Rahul Gandhi. MITSOG hopes to be of some use in a polity where some of the MPs did not even know how to read the budget.
The institute was formally launched by Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on June 7 and will take in any graduate below 35, including aspiring politicians, civil servants, NGOs and even sitting MPs/ MLAs, as its students. There is no university affiliation, though, and no job guarantee.
The one-year, three-semester residential Master`s Diploma in Government offered by MITSOG has core subjects such as the Constitution of India, the functioning of Parliament, relationships between various government organs, budget and finance, economy and communication (with special emphasis on public oratory) and management.
National and international study tours and practical training form part of the Rs. 2.74 lakh-a-year fee package, exclusive of the Rs. 75,000 hostel fee. MITSOG can be reached at (020) 25453872/3091/4001 or at info@mitsog.com
