The number of jobless in India grew by more than three times in 10 years - from 13.8 million in 1991 to 44.5 million in 2001,according to recently released Cenaus figures.
What`s worse, education doesn`t seem to improve your chances of getting a jopb.the unempolyment rate of graduates (17.2%) is significantly higher than the overall unemployment rate of 10.1%.
nearly 40% of graduates are not productively emloyed. Even amomng technical graduares ,as many as 32% are non-workers, only lower than 39% figure for non-technical graduates.
The Census also found over 4,200 graduates had been reduced to begging or vargrancy, including 419 technical graduates.
To a large extent, these statistics are a result of the fact that majority of female graduates -74% among the non technical ones and 49% among those technically qualified - are not working. But among males 22.6% of all graduates are not part of the workforce. That includes more than 25% of male technical graduates.
Surprisingly, graduates in rural India have a much higher work participation rate than those in urban India(68.4% vs 58.7%).
