Seventeen-year-old Piyush Srivastavas joy knows no bounds. The teenager from Allahabad completed a perfect triple by topping the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (IITJEE) on Thursday, to add to the first positions he secured in the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and ISC examination of ICSCE this year.
Piyush also stood second in the UP State Engineering Examination conducted by UP Technical University.
Piyush, who earned heaps of accolades and adulation for topping the ISC-2005 with 98% on May 18 and AIEEE on June 3, added yet another feather to his cap by securing all-India first rank in the prestigious IIT-JEE. The examination was conducted by IIT, Kharagpur.
Piyush, in Mumbai for a 15-day training at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, ahead of the International Physics Olympiad to be held in Spain in July, called up his mother in the morning.
Piyushs father is an additional regional transport officer, posted in Bahraich.
His mother, Puneeta Srivastava, could not control her emotions when she came to know about Piyushs success. She said, Since his childhood, Piyush has an inquisitive brain. He always believes in learning by doing. For now, she is busy handling the unending stream of congratulatory phone calls.
IIT Delhi director D P Kothari said: Around 5,092 candidates are selected from the mains. Of these, 4,000 finally get into the IITs while others are taken in by institutes like BITS, Pilani, and BHU.
The screening test, held on April 10, saw nearly 2 lakh students appear. Incidentally, women constitute less than 20% in these elite institutes. Kothari said: The number has gone up steadily. Hopefully, the situation will improve soon.
P Arun from Hyderabad bagged the All-India second rank. The 5th, 8th, 16th and 17th ranks also went to students from the state. Arun, who comes from a family of doctors, is following into his elder brothers footsteps, who is already studying in IIT Mumbai. He is now on his way to represent India at the Chemistry Olympiad in Taiwan on July 16.
The third and fourth ranks were bagged by students from Kota, Rajasthan.
