Armymen pass out as IIM graduates

Filed under:

If you thought that Army officers can only handle guns and draw battle plans, watch out for this batch of 49 officers and now qualified managers as well, who walked out from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, on Thursday.

With MBA degrees in hand, they are all set to give their competitor management professionals a run for their money.

Drawn from various technical cores of Navy, Army and Air Force, these officers had set out on mission MBA six months ago.

The two years post graduate MBA programme was compressed into a six months capsule by IIM-L on the request of Directorate Resettlement, Ministry of Defence, which trains officers for re-employment after retirement.

The `contingent` included 24 officers from Army, nine from Navy and 15 from Air Force with four lady officers – commissioned either through short service commission or are likely to leave the services soon.

Huge response to the course could be gauged from the fact that 11 companies made a beeline with over 100 job offers having heavy pay packages to recruit these officers even before the results were declared.

It was a unique experience. For six months stayed on the campus with the students, worked day and night to clear five terms encompassing 40 courses, said wing commander K Sarat, who secured first position in the batch.

Second in the order of merit, Colonel Kamal Kant, I did my engineering in 1980 and got an opportunity to be the part of campus life after 25 years
