Tech Seats In Colleges Slashed By 38,000
With 38,000 fewer seats, the competition for engineering, MBA, MCA and pharmacy courses is going to be stiffer this year. The All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), which regulates professional institutes, has decided to reduce student intake in colleges, which do not have adequate faculty members.
Out of the total 38,101 seats slashed this year, 25,335 are in engineering, 8,229 in MCA (Masters in Computer Applications), 3,016 in MBA (Masters in Business Administration) and PG diploma in business management (PGDBM) and 1,521 in pharmacy courses. The all-India student intake for engineering (in AICTE-approved institutes) is going to be 4,52,260 this year against the 4,77,595 seats sanctioned last year. For MBA and PGDBM, the AICTE has approved 72,032 seats against 75,048 last year.
Similarly, seats for MCA are down from last years 56,766 to 48,537 this year. Student intake in pharmacy courses has also been reduced from 26,890 to 25,369 this year.
Seven out of 1,346 engineering colleges, 18 out of 1,007 management institutes, 65 out of 1,051 colleges offering MCA and eight out of 445 colleges in pharmacy have been told not to admit students. Faculty strength in these institutes was found to be less than 50 per cent. In granting approvals this year, the AICTE kept faculty strength as the basic parameter for inspection.
