Some last minute revisions, discussions and cramming later, hundreds of thousands of students took the first of the crucial Class 10 and 12 board exams Tuesday.
A record 1.02 million students - including 13,860 in the Gulf region -will be taking the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examinations that will last over a month.
But the board allowed students in the tsunami-hit regions of the country to take the examination on or after May 17.
A total of 606,632 students will appear for the Class 10 examinations in 2,398 centres while 421,463 students will sit for the Class 12 school-leaving exam in 2,177 centres across the country
