Emphasising on the need for a national resolve to ensure primary education to all children and check the drop out rate, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said the country`s economic development was dependent on it.
Providing primary education to all children in the country is critical in India`s journey towards economic growth, the minister said at the convocation function of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan`s Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and Information Technology here.
Chidambaram said that in Uttar Pradesh alone 10 lakh school going children who can not read of write are added every year. Thus, in a period over 10 years, in one state alone there will be one crore children who cannot read or write, he said.
Nearly 50 per cent of children in India drop out of school by class five, the minister said adding that this phenomenon needs to be reversed.
India has a unique advantage in the sense that we are the only large country where the working age population would keep on increasing over the next 20 years, Chidambaram said adding, We must exploit this to our benefit in the global scenario. We will become the fourth largest economy in the world.
Noting that BVB was doing an yeoman`s job for students from poor and middle-class, Chidambaram also promised all support to BVB Project.
Former Maharashtra Governor Dr P C Alexander and former MP Murli Deora were also present on the occasion.
