Singapore Eyeing Global Education Pie

Filed under:

A preferred business and holiday destination for many in India, Singapore is now getting ready to be a destination for education, too.

In Chennai to give away certificates to 10 Singapore education specialists, Magdalene Lee, Director, Singapore Education Service, said: We want to ensure that the specialists we appoint are real specialists. That accounts for the rigorous training programme all of them have had to undergo.

Out of the 28 agents who were enrolled into the programme, 11 have gone through written and on-site training in Singapore for four days. This certificate is valid for one year, which will make them competent to market Singapore education in India.

These 11 specialists will, henceforth, promote and uphold the quality of education counselling services, particularly the provision of accurate and meaningful information to international students. The small red dot which is Singapore, according to Lee, has a lot common and different with respect to India. The holistic system of education that we have devised derives from our differences and similarities with India, said Lee.

A firm believer in learning through interaction, she said Singapore has some of Americas leading universities like MIT, Wharton and Chicago Business School collaborating with them.

We are aware that price is an important deciding factor for most students. That is why our prices are very competent. The government of Singapore provides almost 70-80 percent financial aid, that cuts costs down to almost a fraction of the actual cost.

Once a student receives aid from the Singapore Government, the student has to necessarily work for three years in order to contribute something back to the economy. Therefore, Singapore not only provides an opportunity of education, but also allows the student to gain work experience, added Lee.

People being a major resource, education plays a vital role in every Singaporeans life. Vibrancy and an introduction to international standards of living are facets they would like to expose to every student.

That is one of the reasons why Singapore has universities like Singapore Management University, Nanyang Technological University, National Technological University, five public polytechnics, a branch of Indian Institute of Management - Bangalore, and affiliations with John Hopkins, Wharton, London School of Economics and MIT
