Oracle Grants $95m For Colleges

IT major Oracle India on Friday inked an agreement with state government`s Board of Information Technology Education Standards (BITES) to provide software and curriculum to 50 engineering colleges in the state.

Under the Oracle academic initiative, the company`s grants to these colleges will exceed $95 million. As per the MoU, Oracle will grant software licences and provide faculty training in collaboration with BITES.

Oracle will also provide internships for select students at its India Development Centres in Bangalore and Hyderabad or at the location of Oracle India`s partners and customers. This will expose students to high-end software product development, global consulting and global software support work.

Speaking after signing the MoU, BITES chairman K.R.S. Murthy said initiative by the IT major to provide software and curriculum will go a long way in upgrading IT skills among students.

Managing director of Oracle India Private Limited, Krishna Dhawan, said when these students pass out of college, they are equipped to take up Oracle technology-based career. In India alone, there are over 6,250 businesses and government departments besides 200 independent vendors and companies who use Oracle technologies, he said.

About 9,600 students in 95 education institutions, including IITs and IIMs, will now be supported by Oracle under the initiative.

The primary objective of the academic initiative is to help colleges prepare students for the high-tech market by providing them practical experience and state-of-the-art business application software before they step into the corporate world
