Cochin Varsity May Get IIT Status

Filed under:

Human Resources Minister Arjun Singh on Friday assured a delegation of Kerala MPs that the government would seriously consider their demand to grant IIT status to the Cochin University of Science and Technology.

The delegation, which called on Mr Singh, was assured by the minister that the Cochin University was a deserving case for the government to consider upgrading it as a national centre of excellence in technology, on the lines of the Indian Institute of Technology or Indian Institute of Sciences.

A committee is already looking into the issue of upgrading seven such institutions of higher learning. The Cochin University is among them.

A meeting was held last week-more have been held in the past-to help these institutes fulfil the upgrade criteria. CPI-M leader K Chandran Pillai told that the delegation pointed out to the Minister that the Cochin University met the criteria and deserved the status of National Institute of Technology.

They met several eligibility standard and specified that the university has been filing patents regularly with 240 research publications in 2003. The university awarded 220 PhDs in the last three years and offers 56 post-gradate programmes in 21 university departments, besides seven undergraduate programmes.

With professed objective of our government in creating a knowledge-based society in the 21st century, we need to create several institutions with unique ambience that could provide opportunities for creativity and excellence, the memorandum to the HRD Minister said.

The Centre`s plan is to provide financial support to enable the institute to create state-of-the-art facilities for research and teaching. This will help the institute upgrade the quality of their work to levels at par with the IITs.

The delegation MPs feel that with an additional fund of Rs 300-400 crore, the Cochin University can match the best higher education institutions.

Kerala has always been on the forefront of education and literacy. Its institutions have produced professionals who have distinguished themselves in India and abroad. It is remarkable that despite no IITs and IISc, the State has produced highly competent professionals, the MPs said.
