People For Education Give Schools Mixed Grade

Filed under:

Thursday, March 31, 2005

Ontarios high schools werent as crowded and students had better access to textbooks last year, a new survey released Wednesday by parents suggests.

But the annual report card by People for Education said parents were forced to pay higher fees for student activities and many school libraries closed early.

It was the fifth year the group surveyed Ontarios secondary schools, asking officials to provide an inventory of school programs and staff.

Spokeswoman Annie Kidder says areas targeted for funding by the Ontario government showed an improvement. But she said the survey showed that boards are still underfunded and thats undermining many core programs.

Its a serious problem that needs to be addressed and it needs to be addressed quickly, Kidder told a news conference.

While overcrowding in general subsided, more than two-thirds of high school English classes had more students than recommended by the province.

The number of schools reporting only part-time vice-presidents had doubled in five years. And 20 per cent more schools reported they had cut back on the length of time libraries are open and the number of hours they are staffed by a teacher-librarian.
