Apparently, setting questions outside the syllabus is not the prerogative of school boards. Students of several colleges in Delhi University (DU), including St Stephens, Sri Venkateswara and Jesus and Mary College (JMC), have sent a presentation to the controller of exams, DU, claiming their paper had questions from outside the syllabus.
According to first year students of Maths (Honurs), their Third year (Analysis I), held on April 28, had questions on subjects that hadnt been taught to them. Said one of the effective students of JMC: Most of us went away very disappointed after giving the paper, as the questions were worth 7 marks in a 38 mark paper.
Teachers admitted that the two questions one on closure and the other one on curvature- were form topics not taught in the first year. Said Nandita Narain teaching the subject in St Stephens college: Question 1(b) was completely outside the syllabus, while question 4 asked students to show the curvature and find multiple points. Yet, university guidelines only ask students to trace a point.
