UGCS Approval

Filed under:

drawing flak from the union minister of Human Resource Development (HRD) and the university Grants Commission (UGC) for flouting guidelines, institutes across the country with deemed to be university status are now under the scanner, with a UGC order not just making it mandatory for them to seek prior approval before launching new courses or increasing the intake of students but also warning them of random quality checks at any time.

A recent UGC notification to vice- chancellors of deemed to be universities states that they were flouting guidelines pertaining to admissions, fees and introduction of new courses, including those offered through private franchising under the distance learning mode. There are currently 84 such universities across the country, with 12 receding funding form UGC.

According to UGC, even institutes offering engineering and technology courses have increased their students intake, albeit without the approval of the regulatory authorities and any increase in their own infrastructure to meet the rise in demand.

To combat the problem, UGC has now issued an order making it mandatory for all such universities to seek prior approval form it for any increase in the intake capacity of students and for starting a new course .A committee has also been set up to look in to the working of the Deemed- to be Universities, with any violation even likely to cost the institutes their status.
