Soon, Class X boards could be optional

Filed under:

If NCERTs revised National Curriculum Framework becomes a reality, Class X examination could become optional. The revised draft, which calls for this drastic step, will be taken up for discussion by the Central Advisory Board of Education on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The suggestion to make the Class X examination optional, together with earlier recommendations on eliminating pass/fail terminology, is geared towards reducing stress.

NCERT director Krishna Kumar said all boards should make Class X exams optional, permitting students to continue in the same school for their plustwo, with the option of internal examinations. Those seeking to opt out of an individual schools system can take the boards.

Other major recommendations already part of NCF include cutting exam time, making 25% to 40% of the questions short answertype and the balance multiple-choice.

Ninety per cent of all students taking the examination should be able to complete the paper and revise the same, the updated NCF states. Instead of pass or fail, NCF has recommended that lack of proficiency should be indicated by a re-examination. Besides, subjects like English and Mathematics would be examined at two levels: standard and high.

Kumar added that right now this was a mere recommendation, which has to be accepted by the CABE and the government before coming into force.
