University Of Mysore To Launch Its DL-Programme
University of Mysores Syndicate and the Academic Council approved on Friday the draft statutes for the establishment of the Directorate of Distance Education and the regulations governing the correspondence courses offered through the distance education mode.
The draft statutes was discussed at the Syndicate meeting following which it was placed before the Academic Council for its approval and was passed unanimously by the academic council members without any discussion.
This assumes significance in view of serious reservations expressed by the Governor over re-introduction of correspondence course through the distance education mode following which the University of Mysore had frozen the process of admissions.
It is reliably learnt that once the draft statutes is accorded approval by the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university, the University of Mysore will commence the admission process with slight adjustments in the calendar of academic events.
The statutes for the establishment of the Directorate and the Regulations governing the courses offered have been submitted to the Government, and the Department of Higher Education, in turn, directed the University to modify the role of the study centres in the statutes. The Government has also provided a few guidelines for incorporation in the statutes and this has been complied with due provisions available under the Karnataka State Universities Act 2000, and submitted the same to the Government for securing the assent of the Chancellor.
The statutes enjoins the Directorate to conduct degree, diploma, postgraduate degree and PG diploma courses through one of more effective distance education methods including correspondence, printed materials, video interactive sessions, contact seminars, special lectures and on-line virtual class-rooms.
The Registrar of the university, who will be the ex-officio member, will act as the Director of the Distance Education until a regular Director is appointed by the Vice Chancellor.
Justifying its foray into the distance education bandwagon, the University of Mysore said that the growing bank of employment opportunities in small, medium and large-scale sectors in India, demands that the University broadens the scope of its academic ventures into a separate Directorate of Distance Education.
Likewise, the regulations governing the correspondence course will come into effect from the date they are approved by the Chancellor.
The regulations states that a Distance Education Monitoring Committee with the Vice Chancellor as Chairman, will be constituted to monitor the standards and ensure that the materials prepared are dispatched to the students within two months of admission
