On the alleging of the reprint of an old controversial text by the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training), Delhi High Court issued notices to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and NCERT seeking their replies by October26.
The petition filed by Deena Nath Batra and four others of the non-government organization, Shiksha Bachao Andolan stated that the books on Social Science and History recently introduced by NCERT for the academic year 2005-06 was nothing but the same old books which were in circulation from 1966 to 2002. They were discontinued after implementation of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE-2000).
Senior advocate R.P Bansal, appearing for the petitioner stated that the new textbooks were shown to conform to NCFSE-2000, but a perusal of the texts exposed this lie. Mr. Bansal stated that NCFSE-2000 provided study of all regions of India while the new texts have left out vast stretches of northeastern states and South India. The Framework further suggested that the intent of correcting the old texts was to promote communal harmony, but the textbooks heaped insults on Jains and Sikhs, which is dangerous for the children`s psyche
