China To Ask India To Recognise Its Degrees

Filed under:

Saturday, April 09, 2005

After Britain, the US, Australia and Canada, China has entered the foreign university market so popular in India. Promoting their brand of university education for the first time in India, 23 Chinese universities have some good deals that may profit both sides.

Already admitting hordes from East Asia for medical studies, Chinese universities now want to tap India, selling themselves as cheaper alternatives.

During Premier Wen Jiabaos visit, the issue of recognising Chinese degrees in India and vice versa is likely to be discussed, Cao Guoxing, Cao Guoxing, director-general of the ministry of education, said. Increasing Chinese government scholarships for Indian students is another issue likely to be discussed during the visit. At present, China offers 25 scholarships to Indians who mostly go to study international relations, medicine, history and literature.

For them to succeed, the Chinese degrees will have to be recognised in India. Therefore, the Chinese education department has plans to approach the Indian government on the issue.

But venturing into a vast market like India, they do not want to restrict to a few subjects. Our law, economics and business administration degrees are popular among international students. It helps students who want to establish business relations with China later on, said Zhang Xiuqin, secretary-general of China Scholarship Council. Clearly, representatives of Chinese universities visiting India are not using just prospectus and brochures to attract Indians. Their ever-booming economy is also alluring.

As they admit Indian students, they also want to establish contacts with industry. The Chinese government just signed an agreement with Infosys. The company is expected to take 1,000 interns from China. We want to encourage such cooperation, Cao Guoxing, director-general of the ministry of education, said. Although there are about 800 Indian students in China at present, a larger intake would require some formalities.
