The hype created over the announcement made by the HRD ministry on free education scheme for the single girl child will not benefit many.
From the official records, it is now evident that the scheme is not universal in its applications, nor will it come into force with retrospective effect. The scheme is applicable to only those taking admission to schools seeking CBSE affiliation from the next academic year. This means schools that are already affiliated to CBSE are not in this list.
If one looks at the whole picture, the beneficiaries would be only 10,000 of the total 5 lakh schools. Moreover, only 5% of those governed by the free education scheme will be offered scholarships, and that too only if they score a first division in class XII.
Only 5% of the total 550 scholarships for undergraduates studies and the 500 scholarships for professional studies have been reserved for the single girl child. The CBSE will decide who gets the remaining scholarships on the basis of the merit.
Scholarships for PG Courses will be applicable to only 300 central universities and deemed universities affiliated to the UGC. df
