UGCs New Plan for J&K and North-East

In a bid to fulfill the vision and promise of Prime Minister towards the Northeast states and J&K, UGC has prepared a comprehensive action plan for these states.

The 14 & 18 point action plan is already in action from the past three months. The initiative under 18- point J&K plan includes extending financial aid to government and government aided colleges. This assistance is for add-on courses related to computerization, extending financial assistance to government in remote areas and provide funding to faculty to pursue minor research work.

UGC chairman V.N.Rajsekharan Pillai said, We are also funding the establishment of two mini campuses under universities of J&K, special assistance to two 100-year old colleges like GGM Science College, Jammu, and S.P. College, Srinagar, and postgraduate courses in Government College to receive assistance from us under the relevant scheme. Also in the pipeline, designating some of the lead colleges as lead colleges, setting up of women studies centre in Kashmir University and academic staff college in Jammu University.

In this action plan, UGC has taken the initiative to convert College of Technology Imphal, to a university level institution. It has also taken a pro-active action to provide infrastructure development support to this college. UGC has also forwarded a proposal to the HRD Ministry to finance the infrastructural development of educational institutions in Mizoram. Besides these the UGC has also in the process to providing special packages for the infrastructure development of colleges in northeast region like construction of building, laboratory equipment and teaching aids. It also decided to support the institutions like SC/ST coaching centres, minority coaching centres, women study centres, and Gandhian studies centres at college and university level in the north-east region.
