The University Grants Commission is working on a module to make live research part of undergraduate courses and interaction between scientific institutes and university students mandatory for the postgraduate studies.
The initiative is part of the ministrys decision to improve the scientific research in universities and colleges. The ministry has approved the recommendations of a task force headed by Prof.M.M.Sharma.
According to the ministry, the UGC has already decided to make scientific research part of undergraduate courses. Universities are being asked to revise the syllabus to incorporate the new initiatives .The commission is also making changes to the National Eligibility test mandatory for the eligibility for a college teachers job science subjects. The Central Scientific Research Institute, which conducts the test, id making the changes and the new format, will be introduced for NET 2006.
Furthermore, UGC is changing eligibility criteria while appointing science teachers in colleges and universitities. Other changes include the exchange of faculty between different science institutions and doubling the intake of the Ph.D students to central and deemed universities by 2010 and improving the gender ratio.
