Concrete Step for the Creation of Indian Maritime University
In order to make appropriate changes in the institutional framework for imparting maritime training in India, the government has taken a step forward towards the creation of an Indian Maritime University.
Earlier in 2002 the government has established Indian Institute of Maritime Studies (IIMS), which includes four governmental institutes. These four institutes are Training Ship Chanakya, the Marine Engineering & Research Institutes (MERI) at Kolkata & Mumbai, and the Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research, Mumbai. Currently these institutes are affiliated to different universities. The Shipping Ministry plans to convert IIMS in to a world class maritime university. The new university will be named as Indian Maritime University which will bring all private institutes into its fold, and streamline all the courses. This university would introduce post-graduate, doctorate & executive course in maritime
