Regulatory Council for Textbooks

Filed under:

A book always holds the basic value & stands of a civilization. A good text-book can shape the ideology & aspirations of a nation. Similarly a bad text-book can dog the idealism of a nation, covert political machinations, and high-level intrigue. By realizing this basic, the Government of India has recently decided to set up a Textbook Regulatory Council. This mechanism will regulate the education system & review the textbooks in Madrasas, R.S.S run school, Missionary school, private school & independent boards.

The decision came after the Zoya Hassan committee submitted its report to the government on textbooks outside the government educational system. The report said schools run by religious organizations always promote their ideology. It is against the sprit of our constitutions & national education policy. The report revealed that religious organizations like Darul Uloom Deoband, Nadvat-ul-Ulema, and R.S.S publish their own text books. The report also said that maximum private schools choose the syllabus prescribed by their boards but opt for books published outside the government.

Currently the NCERT is working on the draft resolution of the council. It is predicted that in next session the draft will be approved by the parliament. Once the council starts functioning, it will get exclusive power to regulate the content of text books which is published privately.
