LB 1208 changes funding for ESU

While LB 1208 is expected to change the amount of state funding received by Nebraskas Educational Service Units, it is still unknown exactly how much that funding will increase or decrease this year.

Adopted during the 2006 legislative session, LB 1208 changes the way distance education programs for public schools are funded. These changes were discussed by the ESU 16 board at its monthly meeting on Tuesday.

We hope by the middle of March that well have some indication of the projected CORE Service dollars, said ESU 16 Administrator Marge Beatty following Tuesdays meeting.

Telescopes in space, on ground analyse Impact

The collision of a NASA space probe and a potato-shaped comet hurled a bright cloud of debris into space at the speed of a jetliner, scientists said.

The Hubble Space Tele- findings were among observations pouring in from telescopes in space and on the ground. For example, an infrared camera on the Very Large Telescope in Chile detected a colour change in the plume, suggesting different size dust particles were sprayed from the comet and were traveling at different speeds through space.

The impact suggests the probe struck a surface that was soft and powdery before penetrating trapped gas and ice beneath, said Pete Schultz, a Deep Impact co-investigator.

But other researchers scope took pictures of the July 4 impact that initially showed comet Tempel 1 as a fuzzy dot that grew four times brighter 15 minutes after the collision.

This is pretty dramatic, said Paul Feldman, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, who observed the impact with the Hubble telescope. He also said that the initial ultraviolet readings taken by NASAs Swift satellite detected a dramatic rise in UV light, indicating the surface was hard or there was solid material underneath. The debris cloud has prevented scientists from peering into the impact crater.

Scientists said it could take at least a week for the cosmic dust to settle before they get to look at the inside of a comet.

Studying the debris hurled from the interior of Tempel 1 and the crater left behind could yield clues to how the sun and planets formed 4.5 billion years ago.

Duke may push talent search

With its three-week summer studies program for Grades 7-10 running successfully at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), Durham-based Duke University is mulling to expand its Talent Identification Programme (TIP) in India.

Through TIP, Duke University identifies academically talented students through centralised tests and offers them challenging and innovative educational programs and conducts research on the nature of such talent.

Launched in 1980 in the US, TIP was recently introduced through its collaboration with IIM-A in India, the only other country to feature the programme. Already a week into the program, which comprises 34 students selected from 13 schools in four cities including Ahmedabad, Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad, Duke has already begun evaluating options for expanding TIP in India.

“We are evaluating possibilities of introducing either e-studies or distant learning courses for students belonging to grades 8-12. While the current program is being sponsored by Duke in association with IIM-A, next year we might go for fee-based programs or corporate sponsored programs,” said Martha Putallaz, executive director, Duke TIP.

Through e-studies, the university intends to conduct common educational programs for students from different countries like the US and India through video conferencing and online studies.

The university may also go for student exchange programs if need be, added Putallaz. Under the current Summer studies program, students are trained in Java-based video gaming and engineering problem-solving by faculties from Duke University at IIM-A which are derived from the graduate-level curriculum.

Its Time to get Serious About Investor Education

Its Time to get Serious About Investor Education

Do you know how much money you have in the bank? Do not be too surprised if you cannot come up with a figure. About half your fellow citizens are in the same boat. It is a bit unfair to expect anybody other than those either terminally obsessed with money or with absolutely nothing else better to do with their time to name the balance in their savings account to the paisa.

Of course, most of us do know the amount we have in fixed deposits. The original sum, that is. In fact, a survey conducted by the Asian Development Bank a couple of years ago, found that slightly over half the respondents (it was an all-India survey which covered 50,000 people in both urban and rural areas), were aware of their investments (predominantly bank deposits) and also knew what interest rate they were getting on it. But that does not mean that they knew the actual worth of their investments.

Matthew Gates is Charles Henderson High Schools AP history class. Literally.

He is the only student at Charles Henderson taking the class. This is made possible through the schools ACCESS lab, which allows students to take advanced classes not offered at CHHS via distance learning from another public high school in Alabama.

Its pretty normal to me, Gates said. I pretty much just sit and listen and answer questions when Im talked to. Its just like a normal classroom except hes there and Im here.

DU students ask for Metro fare reduction

Students of Delhi University under the United Students group have written to the DMRC Chief E. Sreedharan asking him to revise his view on offering students of Delhi University a special fare. Students had earlier written to him suggesting that a special fare could be worked out for students going to and coming back from the Vishwavidyalaya Station only as a beginning but he had cited losses etc as a reason to deny the possibility Students have yesterday written to him again asking him to reconsider the decision as in many cases the cost of transport to and from the DU was more than the annual fees. Students have also argued that a comparison with other metros shows that students everywhere get preferential rates. In a related development, Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf has agreed to meet a delegation of United Students members in relation with the issue of starting Shuttle Bus services for the North and South Campus, which has added to the transport costs of students.

Zimbabwe: A Legacy of Education

Zimbabwe: A Legacy of Education

THIS is the fourth of a five-part series in which The Herald looks at the legacy of President Mugabe, focusing on liberation, reconciliation, democracy, education, health and land reform. Today KAMURAI MUDZINGWA looks at Cde Mugabes legacy to education and training.

ONE of the legacies that President Mugabe will be remembered for is the way he transformed education in Zimbabwe since independence.

When he became Prime Minister in 1980, Cde Mugabe and his Government faced a seemingly insurmountable task — educating the black majority who had been sidelined by the colonial regime. The colonial policy ensured that only 12 percent of the 100 000 blacks who completed seven years of primary education could proceed to secondary education every year.

India – New Education Destination for NRIs

Days are gone, when Indian parents preferred to send their kids to abroad for higher education but now the scenario has reversed with NRI parents seeking to send their children to India for better education. It is clearly reflected in the case Gujarati NRI parents.

A report says that nearly 10 to 15 % of students in the various schools of Gujarat are Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). In Shree Swami Narayan Gurukul Viswavidya Parishthanam Residential School nearly 10% of the students are NRIS. In Gujarat Public School at Vadodra out of 80 students nearly 20 students are NRIs.

With aggressive marketing strategy, perfect blend of Indian culture and ancient Indian education like yoga & Sanskrit these schools have managed to attract NRIs students. These schools are also providing separate residential facilities to the NRI students. These schools are charging between Rs. 60,000 to Rs 2 lakh per annum.

Most of the students are coming from the USA, UK, Fiji, South Africa, Dubai and South East Asian
