Crisis takes a toll on IIM placements

As the current global economic crisis begins to engulf emerging nations including India, silence speaks louder than words at India’s topmost business school IIM Ahmedabad.

Though placement season usually brings the noises of a booming economy, but this year the global recession has brought down a sharp cut in salaries.

The job offers for IIM-A students have come down by about 42 per cent while overseas placements take a serious hit by declining over 60 per cent. It is a familiar situation not just at all IIMs but at other premier b-schools across India too.

“After Lehman Brothers became the most high-profile victim of the global credit crunch in September, we failed to understand the seriousness of the problem. The crisis has not only affected the markets of north America but far beyond which are normally the cream market for b-school graduates for their overseas placements,” said Dr Bakul Dholakia, vice chairman, Institute of Infrastructure Management.

This certainly means more students will now have to look for domestic jobs, thus, in turn giving Indian recruiters reasons to rejoice. And the biggest gainers are both private and nationalised banks. Also gaining for the first time, in a long while, are old economy companies.

“It was a talent drift, if not drain and today these top graduates are looking at opportunities in a diversified sectors which earlier was not there. The placement process was completely divided into 70 per cent to financial sector and rest 30 put together in all other sectors – that is now being changed and for good,” said Dr Anil Gupta, senior faculty, IIM-A.

At the moment the jobs situation in the market is highlighted by the fact that a large chunk of graduates have decided to opt out from placement process this year to study further and wait for the recession to fade out. While others have decided to set up businesses themselves hoping to make the most of a desperate situation.

Navy College hosts education fair

Door prizes and the chance to get a higher education were all available at the annual education fair held April 25 at NSB Kings Bay. The fair was held to introduce civilians and Sailors as well as their family members to the Navy College Program Distance Partnership and Apprenticeship Programs.

In todays Navy, an education is a very important tool to have. To be promoted to senior chief, Sailors must have an associates degree or better. According to NSB Kings Bay Navy College Director Susan Wheless, Navy College has the programs to help Sailors further their careers.

I feel that this is a good way for people to find out what is available to them educationally, said Wheless. Now that the Navy is requiring Sailors to have an associates degree in order to be promoted to E-8, the schools that are being represented at the fair are the schools that have the rate relative degrees that can be posted in their service records, which can give them the ability to get promoted quicker.

Maintaining Motivation Whilst Distance Learning

For most students, whether studying in the classroom or by distance learning, their course of study is usually spread over many months, and in some cases, two or three years, and maintaining consistently high levels of motivation over such long periods is almost impossible. The reasons for this are many, and each of these reasons affects different individuals in different ways.

Firstly, in general terms, once you have started your course of studies, this event itself changes the balance in your life. Study time has to be planned and fitted into a pattern of life where it didnt exist before. Family, friends, and work colleagues are all affected, to a lesser or greater degree, by your decision to study. The demands of studying, the planning, the organising of facilities, the concentration needed, the pressure of coursework and-or examination deadlines all add stresses to your life that have to be managed effectively. Once the initial excitement of starting the course and setting out on the road to achieving a new objective has passed, then the pressures and the workload start to have more impact on your life.

Secondly, over these relatively long periods of study, you change. By this I mean that after one year, for example, you have gained more experience in your work role, you will have completed a large part of the course of studies. You may have been promoted, or been disappointed that you werent. Your work colleagues may have changed, or your manager may have been replaced with another. You may have changed jobs, moved to a new work location, or moved to a new home. You may have found new friends, or a new partner, be having relationship difficulties, or have become a father, or mother. You may feel unsure, albeit temporarily, that the course of studies is going to be as useful as you first thought, or the qualification as relevant to your career as you initially believed.

II PU results hit highest in a decade

Source
Times Of India

Date
2005-05-18

Information
The overall pass percentage of 2005 second-year pre-university examinations is 52.77 – the highest in a decade.

There has been an increase of 3.78% as compared to last years results. Once again, girls have outscored boys. While 59.79% of girls cleared the crucial exams, 47.69% of boys passed.

The results were announced on the websites and over the phone network of BSNL on Thursday evening. All colleges will announce the results at 4 pm on Friday.

Director of PU education D.N. Nayak told reporters that of the 4,72,360 lakh students who appeared for the exams, 2,49,282 students cleared them.

For the last two to three years, we have been keeping tabs on colleges not performing well, and introduced stringent punishment, including deferring of promotions and increments. Probably, that may have contributed to improved performance this year,Nayak said.

Rural students have fared better with 53% passes, as compared to their urban counterparts at 52.47. While 60.32% fresh candidates cleared the examination, only 33% of repeaters and 30.20% of private students passed.

For the first time, supplementary exams will be held in July itself and not in October, he said. Nayak said Udupi district topped with a pass percentage of 76.87, while Koppal was the lowest with 40.63.

Outstanding Migrant Students To Be Recognized

AUSTIN, Texas — High school migrant students from across the state will be recognized at a special ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on March 31 during the annual Migrant Student Recognition Ceremony at The University of Texas at Austin.

The ceremony in the ballroom of the Texas Union will honor Texas students who have completed distance learning courses through the university’s Migrant Student Graduation Enhancement Program in the Division of Continuing Education. The program provides learning tools, services, courses, computer equipment and software applications that enable migrant students to meet or exceed requirements for high school graduation.

“The focus of the ceremony is on these accomplished students. The theme will be the new César Chávez statue located on the West Mall in the heart of the university’s campus,” said Dr. Judy C. Ashcroft, dean of continuing and innovative education. “The statue is an ideal symbol for migrant students since César Chávez devoted his life to improving the living conditions of farm workers. Its presence on the university campus conveys the message that migrant students belong on a college campus.”

Forty exemplary migrant students featured in the 2008 Exemplary Migrant Student publication will be recognized at the ceremony that will be held on the birthday of César Chávez. Two of the featured students will be named as “Students of the Year.” They and three other exemplary migrant students will each receive a $2,000 college scholarship from ExxonMobil. The checks will be presented by Rosendo Cruz, program officer for education and diversity at ExxonMobil.

“It is an honor to recognize these high school migrant students for overcoming the difficulties of their migrant lifestyle and for achieving academic excellence and leadership roles in their schools and communities,” said Ashcroft, who will give the welcoming remarks for the event. “I value the opportunity to encourage these outstanding students to continue their educations beyond high school and to invite them to apply for admission to The University of Texas at Austin.”
