Courses revisited at IP University offered by various universities and to make them more market oriented

Courses revisited at IP University
IN an effort to re-orient the traditional English literature courses offered by various universities and to make them more market oriented. Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) is planning to start a new Post Graduate course in English and Communication Studies (PGECS) from this academic year.

PGECS will focus on communication skills, personality development training, interpersonal communication and sensitisation towards language skills. Anup Singh Beniwal, head, School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) explained: A major focus of this course would be on English as a language and literature in service of communication.

The course content includes teaching of English literature as a written communicative text. Added Beniwal: We want to produce communication trainers. Mushrooming of professional institutes has given rise to an increased demand of professionals, and effective communication of the subject has taken a backseat. Be it an engineering institute or a management college, there is a shortage of well-trained communicators.

The course is conceived as a modular programme. It has an inbuilt postgraduate diploma in it. If a student wishes to quit the course after a year, we will provide him with a postgraduate diploma instead of degree. Also, a few seats are reserved for working professionals too, but we will not compromise on merit, added Beniwal.

The course will appeal students who are aspiring for a career in BPO sector, public relation offices, multinational companies, working professionals sponsored by the companies for value additions to even the potential human resource and professional trainers. For the first time, digital communication is also being introduced in the course. Till now, media courses focused on verbal and written communication, now, in addition, we will teach them computer aided communication like web writing and editing, informed Beniwal.

Talking on the academic importance of the course, Beniwal said, In todays academic scenario which is dominated by technology; management studies, engineering, communication aspect has been neglected for quite some time. Thus, the course is an effort to take it to foreground.

PGECS is a flagship course of School of Humanities and Social Studies. Prior to this, the department was running only PhD programmes and this is the first time that a postgraduate course will be started by the department. The applicant must have secured 50% aggregate in any discipline to be eligible for the course, which is of two years duration. The course will have around 30 seats.
