CET of GGSIPU for the 2007-08 academic session woukf commence from May 7

Dates For Cet Announced
The Common Entrance Test (CET) of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) for the 2007-08 academic session woukf commence from May 7. The University would conduct 20 CETs this year, for making admission to its 35 programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The CET-2007 will be spread over duration of two weeks, with the first exarh starting on May 7 for BSc (honours) nursing and the $ last one on May 20 for B Tech and M Tech (dual degree) biotechnology. Over 1.25 lakh applicants are likely to compete for around 11,500 seats, offered by GGSIPU, through CET-2007. For the first time the CET for four programmes MBA, MBBS, B Tech and MCA will be held in eight cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow and Bhopal. Earlier, only the CET of MBBS programme was conducted outside Delhi. For rest of the courses, the CET will be held only in Delhi.

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) held its third convocation on December 1 at the university auditorium. The chief guest for the occasion was H R Bharadwaj, Union minister of law and justice. Around 39 stu¬dents were conferred gold medals, 112 students of MTech and 11 PhD scholars were award¬ed degrees alongwith 6,544 stu¬dents who have passed out from various courses.

M.A. English and Communication Studies Courses at GGSIPU

Launched under the aegis of the University School of Humanities and Social Sciences (USHSS), M.A. English and Communication Studies, a two-year Masters degree programme was inaugurated by Prof. K.K. Agarwal, Vice Chancellor, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) at the University Campus. Welcoming, the first batch of 30 students for this programme, Prof. Agawal said, We have always tried to diffuse the boundaries between different subjects and encourage interaction among the students and faculty of varied disciplines. This course is an amalgamation of English Literature and communication skills. I am hopeful that at the end of this programme, students will be able to write, analyse and communicate in a much better manner. The programme is designed to open employment opportunities in varied streams like Media, Advertising and Public Relations, Publishing and Editing, Corporate and Government Communication Centers, the burgeoning BPO sector or even teaching of English and communication skills.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
An international conference on Brand India and Global Business Initiatives was organised at SCOPE Convention Centre, New Delhi by the University School of Management Studies, GGSIP University and Jagannath International Management School (JIMS) Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.

Inaugurating the conference, Charanjit Chanana, former minister of industries, spoke of the building up of brand India not just in the post-liberalised phase of the economy but also in the pre-liberalised one. Among others who spoke on the occasion were, Michael Carter, trade commissioner, Australian High commission and Ajay Sahai, director general. Federation of Indian Exporters Organisation.

Others present on the occasion included Parag Dewan, vice-chancellor. University of Petroleum and Energy Studies and Nancy Nix, director, Supply-Value Chain Centre,Texas Christian University, USA.

GGSIPU, Kashmere Gate organised its First Athletics Meet & Basketball Championship at the University Grounds from March 8 to 11, 2007. V K. Jain, Registrar, GGSIPU, Prof. Yogesh Singh, Controller of Examination and Vandana Gupta, Controller of Finance, were among the other dignitaries present at the meet. The four-day sports event included 100 meters race, 200 meters race, 400 meters race, relay race, long jump, shot put, discus throw, javelin throw, triple jump and Basketball match, among others.

The awards for the National contest on Technology Integration in Education, organised by the University School of Education, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) were conferred at a recent at the university. Ved Prakash, vice-chancellor, NUEPA and chairman, NCTE served as the chief guest at the occasion.The contest aims at appreciating the various ways in which students and teachers use computers and the Internet to enhance student learning. In the first year itself, the contest received an overwhelming response from the students of BEd all across the country.

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) of University School of Management Studies, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) is organising a four-week business skill development workshop in association with Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India. Exclusively meant for women students, the workshop will aim to motivate young women to take up entrepreneur-ship. Funded by the MSME, the workshop, which will go on till September 29, 2007, is being attended by 30 final year female students of GGSIPU

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University has decided to open its B.Tech. programmes to B.Scs., in keeping with All India Council for Technical Education guidelines. Earlier, only three-year diploma-holders in select branches of Engineering or Technology with at least 60 per cent marks were eligible for the programme.

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) recently organised ‘Indraprastha Colloquium’ on its campus. Kiran Karnik, president NASSCOM, spoke on the topic ‘IT – India’s tomorrow.’ “We will face increased competition from countries like China and Japan and our present advantages – high quality, low cost and large pool of English-speaking manpower, may be taken up by others as well. But others would not be able to emulate innovation, which comes from our diverse environment,” said Karnik. The talk was then followed by an interactive session with the university’s students and faculty members.

Fest concludes at GGSIPU
The eighth annual technical and cultural extravaganza of the University School of Information Technology (USIT), Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), Info Xpression-2007 was organised from September 27-29. Students from institutions, such as Jawaharlal Nehru University, Miranda College, Delhi College of Engineering, Hansraj College, and several GGSIPU affiliated institutions among others, participated in the festival. Winners at Info Xpression were given cash awards and certificates on the occasion.

Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica, Taiwan has initiated a student and faculty exchange programme with GGSIPU

UNIVERSITY COLLABORATION
Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica, Taiwan has initiated a student and faculty exchange programme with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU). Under this collaboration, two students and two faculty members from the University School of Basic and Applied Sciences (USBAS) will spend anywhere between two weeks to a year at Academia Sinica.This collaboration will be valid for a period of three years. GGSIPU is also working towards offering fellowships to the students of Academia Sinica.

New courses at GGSIPU

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) has announced the entrance examination dates for its engineering, non-engineering and medical admissions for the academic year 2006-07.

The university has also released its three new admission brochures for three different programmes. Another deviation of the admission process this year would be the cut-down of the Common Entrance Test (CET) period from two months to one month. The tests for different programmes start from May 6 and will end on June 4. Another first time feature is the seven outstation examination centres Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai,

Jaipur, Kanpur, Kolkata and Mumbai. The university is also introducing optical mark reader (OMR) system to reduce data entry time at various stages of the admission procedure.

Moreover, according to Saroj Agarwal, director, academic affairs, GGSIPU, The photographs of the candidates on the CET forms will be used in the admit cards, attendance sheet and in the counselling list to counter any attempt of impersonation. According to V K Jain, registrar, GGSIPU, The university will conduct 19 CET for admission to its various programmes. The CET admission to MBBS programmes will be held on June 4, 2006.

The admission brochure I and II of non-engineering and engineering programmes respectively are currently available, while the brochure 111 for MBBS admission will be available from March 31 onwards.

The university is also introducing three new courses from the forthcoming academic session. The University School of Law and Legal Studies is offering LLM with an intake of 30.

Vardhman admissions announced for the MBBS Programme

The admission process for the MBBS programme of the Vardhman Mahavir Medical College affiliated to the Guru Gobind Singh Indrap-rastha University is likely to commence from March 31. The university will conduct the Common Entrance Test (CET) for the 75 of the total 100 seats offered in the programme. The entrance exam is scheduled for May 12, 2006. The CET for MBBS will be conducted on an all-India basis at eight cities including Delhi, Bho-pal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kanpur, Jaipur, Kolkata and Mumbai, informed V K Jain, registrar of the university.

Out of the 75 seats for which CET will be conducted, 50 seats are reserved for the students of Delhi region and 25 for all India region categories. In addition, 15 seats are filled through the CBSEs All India Pre Medical Test and 10 from a central pool of allocation, which is said to be done by the health ministry. The eligibility criteria for the programme is a minimum age of 17 as on December 31, 2006; Indian citizenship; should have passed 10+2/ equivalent from recognised board/ university with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology and with minimum 50% marks together in PCB, among others.

Last year, around 20,000 students had appeared for the MBBS-CET and the numbers are likely to swell this time around.

Thirty-three foreign students were conferred their degrees at a special convocation organised by Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) recently. These students, who came from 19 different countries including Uganda, Ghana, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, Lesotho, Mexico and Mauritania, have completed their Masters in Human Resource Planning and Development (MHRPD) programme, offered by the Institute of Applied Manpower Research, affiliated to GGSIPU. The event was presided over by A. R. Kidwai, Lieutenant Governor of Haryana.

BA in Law by (GGSIPU)

To facilitate students who want to opt for para-judicial services, to appear for other competitive examinations or pursue postgraduation in programmes other than law, GGSIPU has decided to award a BA (Law) degree after completion of three years of the five-years LLB (Honours) programme. Three institutions start pilot water treatment plant

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University with help from Germanys University of Karlsruhe, and the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi has installed a pilot Rotating Biological Contractor facility to treat waste water at Yamuna Vihar Sewage Treatment Plant. The university hosted a day-long workshop on the same, which was attended by representatives of the collaborating institutions, Delhi Jal Board, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Residents Welfare Associations and nongovernmental organisations, amongst others.

Blood donation camp at IP University

A blood donation camp was organised by Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), in association with Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Shahdra. The camp was inaugurated by Prof. K. K. Increased intake at GGSIPU
Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) has significantly increased the intake for its various academic programmes, for the 2007-08 academic session. In total it will now offer 1760 more seats in the forthcoming session than the previous year. The university has revised the intake in several of its sought after courses. This includes B.Tech, in which 600 seats have been added this year; BBA, with 240 more seats; B.Ed with 300 added seats; MBA has 250 additional seats; 103 more seats have been added in BCA; 70 seats in B.A. LLB; MCA now includes 90 more seats; and the Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication has 15 additional seats.
